Delta’s Birds & Biodiversity Conservation Strategy

BBCS Cover picture.png

The community of Delta is home to a large range of ecosystems and wildlife. With continued support from Mayor and Council a Delta Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy was adopted in February, 2018 to help protect and preserve Delta’s rich natural heritage.

Having one strategy that ties together current efforts and identifies new initiatives provides focus and clarity across departments and reduces the duplication of efforts and resources, and missed opportunities. The development of the Strategy has been informed though discussions with the Delta Naturalists Society, environmental community groups, agricultural community, tourism and business associations, federal and regional government staff and Delta staff from multiple departments. The strategy provides an action orientated document that meets Delta’s mandates and goals.

Birds Love Delta Partners

Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture

Just as birds in flight are unrestricted by borders, bird conservation spans many jurisdictions and a wide range of interests. Bird Habitat Joint Ventures are collaborative partnerships that enhance work in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to conserve habitat for the benefit of birds, other wildlife, and people.

Environment & Climate Change Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada works to protect and conserve our natural heritage. Only 22% of Canadian bird species spend the whole year in Canada. We share “our” birds with many other countries. Canada, through the Canadian Wildlife Service, participates in many partnerships, both at home and abroad in bird and habitat conservation.

Delta Naturalists’ Society

The Delta Naturalists’ Society (DNS) is a BC Nature Club with an interest in all things “Nature” including, but not limited to: Environment, Land, Sea, Sky, Stars, Wildlife, Botany, Birding , Agriculture, Conservation. The DNS runs a weekly birding walk, maintains nest boxes, and provides educational displays at events. The DNS spearheaded the development of the Delta Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy.

Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust

Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust is a non-profit organization that promotes the annual preservation of over 3,500 ares of farmland and wildlife habitat on the lower Fraser River delta through co-operative land stewardship with local farmers. DF&WT was established in 1993 by a group of local farmers and conservationists with an interest in conserving agricultural and wildlife resources in Delta, British Columbia.

Birds Canada

The mission of Birds Canada is to conserve wild birds of Canada through sound science, on-the-ground actions, innovative partnerships, public engagement, and science-based advocacy. Birds Canada is working to support and maintain the health and function of the Fraser River Delta. There are many different programs and initiatives supporting birds in British Columbia.

Ducks Unlimited Canada

Coastal estuaries provide crucial stopover habitat for migratory waterfowl, where they rest and refuel. Farmers’ fields in the lower mainland offer important wintering grounds for birds that do not leave for warmer waters. Duck Unlimited Canada works to conserve this province’s valuable wetlands so ducks, fish and people can use them for future generations.
